If you are having a baby in Mississauga, you soon won’t have your choice of hospitals.
As of Oct. 8, all deliveries, as well as inpatient services for women and children, will only be handled at Credit Valley Hospital.
Mississauga Hospital will continue with childbirths as usual before that date.
The change is taking place because of construction at the Mississauga Hospital site on the Queensway and Hurontario Street. Credit Valley has undergone renovations to accommodate the transition for patients and families.
Credit Valley Hospital is located at Erin Mills Parkway and Eglinton Avenue West.
“We are bringing these services together at Credit Valley Hospital to create a more organized and streamlined care model for our patients and employees. This change will also provide a consistent patient experience and more effectively manage the increasing demand in our community,” according to information provided by the healthcare system.
Chances are, if you are 40 or older and lived in Mississauga, you were born at Mississauga Hospital, which opened in 1958. Credit Valley Hospital didn’t come along until 1985, when it started to share delivery duties. Both hospitals, as well as the old Queensway Hospital in Etobicoke, are now under the umbrella of Trillium Health Partners.
Trillium handles about 8,000 child births each year and is preparing to soon reach the 10,000 mark, a rate that is one of the highest in Canada.
Eventually — and it could take up to ten years to complete — all births will switch back to Mississauga Hospital when the Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children opens within the Mississauga Hospital site that is expanding to become one of the largest healthcare facilities in Canada.
Despite the move and ongoing construction, emergency care will continue at both hospitals
“If you visit the Mississauga Hospital Emergency Department and need specialized care from an obstetrician/gynecologist or paediatrician who is located at Credit Valley Hospital, our medical teams will ensure a safe transfer,” according to Trillium. “This will help you receive the right care from the right specialists when you need it most.”
As well, select paediatric clinics will remain at or adjacent to Mississauga Hospital, including the Family Care Centre and Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Services. You can find a full list of outpatient clinics here.
